When a frail Pope Francis appeared on the balcony of St Peter's Basillica and delivered his Easter blessings to excited worshippers, little did we know that it would be the last time we would see the pontiff alive.

As he embarked on a surprise popemobile tour around St Peter’s Square, it was clear that the ailing pope was worse for wear. He was in hospital for five weeks, battling a severe bout of pneumonia in both his lungs.

Even before the prolonged hospital stay, Pope Frnacis' health had been deteriorating for a while. In fact last year he had approved a stripped-down funeral for himself.
Then the chosen cardinal is asked if he accepts the position. If he does, he selects a papal name, usually honouring a saint or a previous pope. He is then dressed in the traditional white cassock and steps onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to greet the crowd.

A cardinal announces "Habemus papam" which is Latin for "We have a pope." The new pontiff then delivers his first address, setting the tone for his leadership of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics.
