Describes how to create soil core samples using simple tools: pipe, sledge hammer, wooden dowel. I developed this technique after searching for an off-the-shelf tool, but the cost was several hundred dollars--I only had a budget of about $25. I will use these core samples with my fifth grade class when teaching science lessons about soil composition and creation in my earth processes unit. The samples in the video were taken from the Piedmont region in Virginia (Arlington County), which explains the heavy clay in the samples.
