In this demo, we are using the TI LaunchPad development ecosystem to create a complete end-to-end IoT application. We created a simple WiFi-connected sensor using the MSP430F5529 Microcontroller LaunchPad + CC3100 WiFi BoosterPack, which is hooked up to a potentiometer knob.
We are publishing the potentiometer sensor readings using MQTT to a cloud-side application using node-RED. Within node-RED, we trigger various actions in the cloud based on the incoming sensor readings. At various sensor reading thresholds, node-RED triggers the following actions:
When sensor reading is greater-than 500, send a text message using Twilio
When sensor reading is greater-than 1000, send a tweet
When sensor reading is greater-than 1500, send a notification to an Android phone using the "Notify my Android" app
When sensor reading is greater-than 2500, publish a message to another WiFi-connected LaunchPad kit to display a message on an 8x8 LED matrix array.
We used ENERGIA to develop the firmware for the LaunchPad microcontroller kits. Energia is an open source, community-developed rapid prototyping tool for creating embedded software. You can learn more @ www.energia.nu
