SD70M-2s and Sharp Paint on the Maine Northern Railway

Over Easter Weekend 2025, a couple of good friends and I would make a trip north, heading to our buddy's cabin in Maine to spend a couple days checking out the scenery and of course, some railfanning as well. It was my first time being in this lovely state and I enjoyed every minute of my time there. After leaving New Jersey the evening before, arriving in Northern Maine at sunrise and getting about two hours of sleep, the fellas and I found ourselves getting down to business, chasing the Maine Northern Railway. The Maine Northern Railway is one of three sister railroads operated by the New Brunswick Railway Company, part of Irving Transportation Services. The Maine Northern, Eastern Maine and New Brunswick Southern Railways operate across Northern and Eastern Maine, as well as parts of New Brunswick in Canada. This railroad transports We would be giving chase to Maine Northern 910, the Brownville Jct to Millinocket Turn on an absolutely beautiful Good Friday and our first day in Maine.

Starting out our chase at Cedar Lake Road along the former Bangor & Aroostook rails of the Millinocket Subdivision, MNR 910 would coast around the bend with a lengthy train in tow. Leading the way is NBSR 6409, 6410 and 6401, a trio of the railroad's twelve SD70M-2s, which were acquired from Norfolk Southern over the last couple of years, all wearing the railroad's sharp corporate scheme of green and gold. We would chase 910 north, catching them at a few spots along the way before their arrival in Millinocket. After a few hours of building their train and a little detour to check out the local sights, we'd meet back up with 910 as the made their way back south to Brownville, catching them at a couple of locations. This stretch of railroad is quite scenic and captivating, with plenty of twists and turns, tree tunnels, bodies of water and some cool bridges to keep things interesting, it really is hard to go wrong.
