The title of this march refers to the codename of the Normandy Landings, D Day, June 6th 1944. "Neptune" was composed for Ripon City Band at the request of their conductor, Mark Sidwell, for the 80th anniversary celebrations of D Day . The work is intended as a tribute to the memory of all those involved in the D Day operations. It also doffs my cap to the Grewelthorpe branch of the Royal British Legion whose centenary, by happy chance, fell in 2024. The score was completed on 21st March 2024 and was first performed in Ripon Cathedral by Ripon City Band with Richard Martin (organ) on June 6th 2024 .
"Neptune" has three themes: a dark opening idea inspired by the photograph, Into the Jaws of Death, taken by Robert F Sargent during the landings at Normandy. This contrasts with a bright, cheerful melody and a majestic central theme. The work ends with a brief joyful coda.
This performance is by Rothwell Temperance Band, with Richard Martin at the organ, conducted by the band's MD, Dave Roberts. It was recorded live at their Remembrance Concert in Holy Trinity Church, Rothwell on 7th November 2025.
