#JSTBraveNewWorld is our programme of work to keep our community connected and audiences enjoying theatre at home.
154 actors will perform Shakespeare's sonnets, in order, one a day.
A minute of hope and beauty each day.
We are thrilled to have Sonnet 146 performed by the inimitable Helena Bonham Carter, known for her roles in blockbuster films like the ‘Harry Potter’ series, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and 'The King's Speech'. Most recently she plays Princess Margaret in ‘The Crown.’
GLOSS by Dr Molly Yarn
The earliest text of S146 contains an error – the compositor replaced the first 3 words of L2 with the last 3 words of L1 (my sinful earth). The intended words are lost, so editors make suggestions; here, ‘thrall to’. Other choices inc. feeding, foiled, rebuke, starv’d… Each option affects meaning. Shax editors make many such choices about the text, as the early versions are imperfect. As the reader, dig deep! Question! There’s always more to learn! (Btw, 146 pits the mortal body/worldly concerns vs. the soul/immortal life.) [Editor's Note: See, just then, by explaining the meaning in that way, I made an interpretive choice that affects how you see the sonnet! What do YOU think it's about? Question editors!]
