Around 1975 Dave bought an art deco lighter at an estate sale, and that got him interested in finding more lighters with unique design and construction. Once his friends found out that he was collecting lighters, he ended up with over 150 of them. At one time his collection consisted of 300 lighters.
In 1981, he told friends that he had too many lighters and was stopping collecting them.
