John showed people Jesus. Anyone who saw Jesus for who he was, because of John, is greater than John. You and I, are greater than John, and he was great! Not because of his fine clothes, or politically correct speech, but because he showed the world Jesus. Jesus is telling us what John needed reminding of. We live in the good news of Jesus not in judgment. If we lived in judgement, then even John would have been dealt with harshly here. Our greatness is in our expectation of Jesus.
