"This is like Stelvio (Italy), why do you need to go to Stelvio?"
Mount Hamilton is another iconic place in the Bay Area. Do you know that this road is 138 years old and only took one year to build, well before the first automobile was built? It’s a long stretch of 19 miles with no traffic lights from Alum Rock Ave to the summit with about 4,000 ft of elevation gain. A round trip is 38 miles with a total elevation gain of almost 5,000 ft. It’s a gentle climb with slope gradients of about 6%. I never get bored biking here. The scenic views are just inspiring with the freshest air you can breathe in. The road is very safe for cyclists with plenty of passing room for cars.
The mountain top now has 9 telescope domes, which you can see from miles away on a clear day. Luckily we’re in norther California where 90% of the days in the year are clear with blue sky. This is a good place to train for a century or a double century bike ride or part of your triathlon training. This route is also popular among sports cars drivers and motorcyclists.
