The reason for doubling letters in English spelling is to maintain the pronunciation of the vowel sound. When a single consonant follows a single vowel, the vowel sound is short. However, when the consonant is doubled, the vowel sound is lengthened. This is because the double consonant makes the consonant sound stronger, which in turn makes the vowel sound longer.
