Wealth, Poverty & the Test of the Heart

This khutbah reminded us that “**Wealth and poverty exist for a reason known only to Allah.**” Wealth is not a badge of honour—it’s a *test* that can raise a person through gratitude or ruin them through arrogance. As warned: “**Wealth is a cause of tyranny.**” Allah distributes provision in degrees and the dunya is fleeting compared to the Hereafter, so the goal is not to chase more, but to build a heart that is humble, thankful, and content. The Prophet ﷺ clarified the real definition of richness: “**True wealth is not in having many possessions (i.e., money), but rather in having a contented soul.**” When someone feels self-sufficient, danger begins: “**(Nay, man does transgress all bounds, because he sees himself self-sufficient).**” (Al-‘Alaq 6–7). And we were reminded what truly remains from our wealth: “**The servant says: My money, my money! He only has three things from his money: what he eats and consumes, what he wears and wears out, or what he gives away and acquires. Everything else is gone and he leaves it for the people.**” (Muslim). The story of the three men (leper, bald, blind) brought it home: two failed the test by withholding, and one succeeded through gratitude and generosity—showing that *inner wealth* matters more than financial wealth. If you are rich: be humble, spend halal, avoid waste, remember Qarun’s downfall, and **send your best deeds forward to the Akhirah**.
