Services between Glasgow and Edinburgh via Falkirk High in the current timetable operate every half hour calling at Croy, Falkirk High, Polmont, Linlithgow and Haymarket. This service frequency will likley remain for quite a while now however previously services on this route operated every 15 minutes with all trains calling at Falkirk High and Haymarket with alternate trains calling as Croy and Polmont/Linlithgow.
This is the fastest and primary route between Glasgow and Edinburgh as it is the fastest between the 2 cities. There are 4 main routes between Glasgow and Edinburgh, all of which are fully electrified using overhead electrification however this is the only route to be served by the ScotRail Express branded trains. Until this route was electrified class 170 turbostar trains operated services along this route.
The other routes between Glasgow and Edinburgh include Glasgow Queen Street low level via Airdrie and Livingston North which operate through the Helensburgh Central, this is the route which the Caledonian Sleeper to Fort William usually takes, Glasgow Central via Shotts and Glasgow Central via Carstairs which is the only route between Glasgow and Edinburgh served by other operators those being Cross Country and LNER. There are also services from Glasgow Queen Street via Cumbernauld which are planned to termiante at Falkirk Grahamston from May 2022.
On this route via Falkirk other services share parts of this route including stopping services from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Stirling, Alloa and Dunblane. Inter7City services from Glasgow to Perth, Inverness, Dundee and Aberdeen also use this route as far as Croy. Also services on the West Highland line along with those via Maryhill use the same approach tracks in to Queen Street. From Edinburgh Park to Edinburgh the tracks are shared with the Bathgate route services from Glasgow to Edinburgh and LNER share the route between Edinburgh and Polmont with the Highland Chieftain service from London Kings Cross to Inverness.
Between Edinburgh Park and Haymarket the railway line runs alongside the Edinburgh Trams route to/from the airport with the tram line crossing over the railway line between Saughton and Balgreen tram stops.
