The BBC Radio adaptation of P.G. Wodehouse's "The Mating Season" follows the classic Jeeves and Wooster formula of mistaken identities, romantic entanglements, and general aristocratic chaos, all set in a delightful English country house.
The story sees the perpetually well-meaning but dim-witted Bertie Wooster travelling to Deverill Hall, impersonating his friend Gussie Fink-Nottle. Gussie, prone to public drunken antics, is in trouble with the law and needs to be out of sight to avoid upsetting his fiancée, the highly sensitive Madeline Bassett (who believes the stars are "God's daisy chain" and fairies weep into tiny handkerchiefs).
However, Bertie's good deed quickly escalates into a tangled web of complications. He finds himself caught between various amorous couples whose relationships are being thwarted by a formidable collective of five disapproving aunts who reside at Deverill Hall. Further complicating matters, the real Gussie Fink-Nottle eventually shows up, also in disguise, pretending to be Bertie. And to top it all off, Bertie's valet, the supremely intelligent Jeeves, also materializes under an assumed identity to discreetly pull the strings and untangle the mess, which includes a troublesome dog, a jobsworth constable, and a village concert.
The synopsis focuses on the humorous predicaments arising from Bertie's attempts to help his friends, his constant fear of marrying Madeline Bassett, and Jeeves's effortless ability to resolve the most seemingly insurmountable farcical situations.
