Ding Dong Ditch was an album recorded from 1988 to 1990 by Lincoln and Russell Fong under the name Critical Mass. Following 2 self released EPs (Operation Dreaming Of Babylon and In Deepest Rebound) the album was begun in September Sound Studio Mk1 and finished in SS Mk2, both studios built for the Cocteau Twins.
Critical Mass toured with Ultra Vivid Scene in 1990 and the intention was to get a label to release the album. However following line up changes and a loss of faith in the finished album it was shelved. 'We didn't think it fitted with the times...' The band seemed always to defer to their scheduled work and the Godlike genius of certain associated artists in 'a competition we could never win'.
But having found this album after at least 35 years I realise I should have credited it even as the band seemed always to be imploding. Anyway I think it's worth a listen and it does have some great tunes on it so here's to those times and all the people who made them fun, many of whom appear in this video. And any listeners brave enough to give it a spin. Feel free to comment.
