S Plan wiring using Wago 221 and mBox L32 junction box.

We review the Wago mBox L32 junction box used for S-Plan heating wiring.
The L32 wiring centre uses the popular Wago 221 connector. It's designed to improve upon the popular Honeywell 10-way junction box, which has been used extensively for central heating wiring.

We put the Wago mBox to the test in a common configuration of S-plan wiring using a Nest heat link. Using Wago connectors speeds up wiring time, but what about the other features in this design.

On an S-Plan wiring, we found that we quickly ran out of terminals. Using a Nest heat link to remove separate room thermostat and timeclock components did not solve this. The manufacturers wiring diagram omits most of the CPC (earth) connections but strangely does not on the Y plan wiring diagram.

The second major problem is the lack of enough cable clamps. Two cable clamps were not enough to accommodate the seven cables in our mockup. It was a real challenge to get six cables under the grips.

We are usually big fans of the Wago products, but we don't think this one delivers. The use of Wago 221's does reduce the wiring time, but we feel this box should have many more terminals and much more wiring room to cope with the ever-growing complexity of today's heating systems.
