If the only way you can play triplets is by alternating accents, it’s not going to sound like jazz—it’s going to sound like a marching exercise.
Philly Joe Jones had a way of turning simple triplet stickings into some of the most creative, flowing jazz vocabulary ever played. In this video I’ll break down three of his triplet stickings from his solo on Asiatic Raes with Sonny Rollins (Newk’s Time).
These are practical, authentic phrases you can use right away. I’ll also show you how to string them together into longer, musical solos so you can stop running out of ideas and start sounding like Philly.
