Angel's Good Eats: Teen chef draws crowds to Kat's Korner in Silsbee

SILSBEE, Texas — Kat's Korner, a family-run eatery in downtown Silsbee, is not just a local favorite but a culinary destination for southeast Texas. Owned by Katherena Hoffman, a nurse and self-proclaimed foodie, the restaurant offers a diverse menu that includes charcuterie bowls, fruit bowls, and a variety of grab-and-go options.

"We lived in Houston long enough and became foodie," Hoffman said. "So I try to provide things here that I would want, things that we can't get, like charcuterie bowls or fruit bowl."

The eatery, located at 120 East Avenue H, opened in 2022 and has quickly become known for its homemade dips, wraps, and a full lunch menu featuring sandwiches, pizzas, nachos, and quesadillas. Hofman recommends the Italian nacho pizza, which has garnered a loyal following.

"Our pizzas are really good. I have really good quality ingredients for pizzas," she said. "We have, one of our favorites is the Italian nacho pizza."

Adding to the restaurant's charm is Hofman's 17-year-old son, Ty, a high school senior who has become a culinary sensation in his own right. Ty hosts two date nights a month, each featuring a themed, multi-course meal that has become so popular, bookings fill up quickly.

"Every single date night, we've been booked out and within a week or two of saying, 'Hey, we're open for bookings,' we'd be full up," Hoffman said.

Katherena's son Ty created his own menu that includes dishes like babka bread, spinach puffs, French onion soup, Dubai crepes, crawfish cakes, and crème brûlée, all of which have received rave reviews.

"My spinach puffs that I'm done. It's kind of like a spinach dip that's in puff pastry and baked and seasoned," Ty said.

As Ty prepares to start his senior year at Silsbee High, his parents are planning to expand Cat's Corner to a larger location in Silsbee within the year. The restaurant is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Fans can follow Cat's Corner on Facebook for updates on Ty's next date night events.
