First video on YouTube of this rare OmniAlert! The ambience heard after this siren winds down are Barberton's 2 508's (low pitched) and their Thunderbolt 1000A (higher pitched).
So here's the story. I was originally planning to see a Whelen Finback Vortex with Cameron in Mahoning County, however, the weather had called for rain today. Luckily the rain came through yesterday and the weather was cooperating for the test, however, my parents didn't really like the idea of me driving one hour to an unknown place a good distance away; plus I was really tired anyways because I've spent the entire week of my Spring Break doing college visits in preparation for applying to colleges when I begin my senior year of high school next fall. So I decided on going to this OmniAlert. Since nobody has filmed any of Norton's sirens before, it was quite the risk. So, I decided to do some quick Googling to see if I could figure out whether they were testing or not. Luckily I found a post on the fire department's Facebook page stating that following SWA they would start testing again, so I thought why not hear a Whelen, since I'd never heard one up close before. It was quiet enough that I didn't need hearing protection, but it gets the job done here. And it only ran for a disappointing 15 seconds counting wind up and wind down. However, I got a killer ambience from Barberton (they test for 30 seconds); you can hear their 2 508's and their Thunderbolt 1000. I was going to go to Barberton's Thunderbolt, but I wasn't sure if they were testing yet as they are picky when they do (which I guess they are now so that will be recorded next month sometime), so I decided to play it safe and come here instead since this has been on my list of sirens to record anyways. This siren replaced a red Federal Sign and Signal STH-10A which happens to be laying on the ground of the parking lot near where this siren is located. It looks to be in pretty good condition but some horns were crushed as the siren was on its side. I took a ton of pictures of that siren and will upload them in another video at a later date. I couldn't hear Norton's 2001-SRNs, but I think I was too far away from them to hear them. Anyways, enjoy!
