How do you paint using ink resist and gouache? Join me to celebrate the Dia de los Muertos

Ink resist or gouache wash off is an amazing technique which deserves to be better known. You need to be precise, but then there is an element of surprise and a fair amount of jeopardy. But the final image is like a wood cut print and has a charm all of its own. Join me in celebrating the Dia de los muertos or Day of the dead by painting a Mexican sugar skull.

The process is simple - paint your image in gouache, coat with waterproof ink and then wash off to reveal the final image. The gouache dissolves and takes away the excess ink. The ink acts like the grout of a mosaic, pulling the whole image together.

Halloween has become spooky and scary, but the Day of the Dead is all about celebrating the life and love for those who have died. I think we should incorporate this more into our Halloween, shouldn't we?
