This sentence pattern is usually used in formal situations.
1. A とともにB is used when you want to say that "A" and "B" are correlated and that "B" changes as "A" does. Both the "A" part and the "B" part are used with words that describe changes (e.g. decrease, become, etc.).
Aが変化するとBも変化する。/ with, as, in proportion to


とともに vs につれて vs にしたがって

• につれて and にしたがってalso mean “as, in proportion to, with, as… then…” but they do not have meanings of “at the same time” or “together with”.
• につれて and にしたがって can be used for both short-term and long-term changes, but とともに is often used for long-term changes.

〇話すにしたがって、だんだん彼と打ち解けてきた
〇話すにつれて、だんだん彼と打ち解けてきた。
△話すとともに、だんだん彼と打ち解けてきた。
As we talked, I became more comfortable with him.


人々の考え方は時代の流れとともに変わっていくものだ｡
(It is normal that) People's way of thinking changes with the passage of time.


スマホの普及とともに、歩きスマホの事故が社会問題になってきている。
As smartphones are widely used now, accidents caused by people looking at their phones while walking are becoming a problem for society.

2. A とともにB is used when you want to say "A" and "B" at the same time. Even if there is no causation or correlation between "A" and "B", it can be used to simply say that they happened at the same time.
Aと同時にB / at the same time, with, and in addition


卒業は嬉しさと共に寂しさも感じる。
Graduation brings both joy and sadness at the same time.


警察は、その容疑者を捜がすとともに、周囲への聞き込みを続けている。
Police continue to search for the suspect and get information from the surrounding people at the same time.


3. A とともにB is used when you want to say that "work together with “A” (person) to do “B”. It is often used when you want to add the nuance of "cooperate with".
Aと一緒にB/ together with


転勤することになったため、家族とともに引っ越こすことにした。
I decided to move with my family because I was transferred.
(it has been decided that I get transferred)
