J S Bach is an inspiration for all classical organists, and wrote a huge repertoire for the instrument. This Passiontide chorale prelude is taken from his Orgelbüchlein (Little Organ Book), intended to be a collection of chorale preludes to cover the entire liturgical year. This chorale is sometimes translated as "O man, thy grievous sin bemoan", and is, in the performer's opinion, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
It is the third recording of this beautiful piece on this channel, with the others being here: • Chorale Prelude "O Mensch, bewein dei... • O Mensch bewein dein Sünde grosse - J...
This recording was made on a Johannus Live III AGO organ, using the sample of the Bätz Organ in the Domkerk, Utrecht. Today's instrument includes 11 stops from the 1569-1571 Peter Janszoon de Swart renaissance organ. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Dutch firm Bätz constructed an otherwise new instrument. The sample sets can be heard from four positions: console, front of the church, centre of the church, rear of the church. This recording uses the rear of the church position, affording the most generous recording of the wonderful acoustic in this fine building.
