Heavy Menstrual Bleeding is commonly seen in women. Its not to worry but at some instances could lead to chronic formations. Follow the simple steps for a heathier life style.

What are the causes for heavy menstrual bleeding ?
Heavy menstrual flow can be seen in teenage girls during puberty or even in the middle aged woman. If the bleeding during periods is more than 80 ml or happening for ore than 8 months, sometimes with the mass in the blood seen or giddiness then we may call this ' Heavy Menstrual Bleeding ".
Age may be the factor, the hormonal imbalance at puberty, fibroids with heavy bleeding. pcos with heavy bleeding, or the endometrium diagnosed with polyps may also cause heavy menstrual bleeding. Heavy bleeding if continues may cause anemia in some women.

How to prevent HMB ?
A gynecologist visit, then checkup to find out the bleeding disorders due to medicines, uterine issues, thyroid deficiencies or hormonal imbalances etc., Once diagnosis is made after required scans and tests, then treatment could be given. If fibroids present its not removed for all the ladies, uterus removal is also not to do for all the patients. Unless it is painful or clinically indicated we will not remove the organs. Sometimes polyps removal will reduce bleeding.

Tablets used for postpone of menses can cause heavy menstrual bleeding ?
Its not true, it may cause irregular cycles or bleeding, monthly cycles may continue to get delayed in future months also. So, we do not recommend the postpone tablets.

How to surgically remove the uterus ?
Surgical uterus removal would be done only when clinically recommended for such woman, not for all the patients. Once decided to do laparoscopically small incisions are made on the abdomen and the uterus is removed. One day stay at hospital, faster recovery, less bleeding, less post surgical infections, more importantly no abdominal scar makes the laparoscopy adding up the cosmetic value to the body of any woman.
If the fibroid is big size and if more complications then the open surgery to remove the uterus is recommended with 8 to 10 incisions.
Also when the uterus is descended the open surgery is recommended.
Medications for HMB could be like non hormonal tablets and hormonal tablets to some woman that has progesterone to reduce bleeding. Mirena insertion is done which lasts for about 5 years and can reduce the heavy flow.
