Hold your breath, because today we’re going to talk about a striking piece of science fiction: Prometheus. We’ll set off on a journey toward the origins of human existence and be pulled into endless questions. If you’re ready, then come with me.
Our film opens with one of the beings we know as Engineers staring off into the distance by a riverbank. We sense that this gaze is driven by a grand purpose, yet we can’t tell what he’s doing. He then drinks a liquid taken from a capsule, and that liquid severely deforms his body. As his body begins to break apart, he falls into the river; DNA fragments scatter and sow the seeds of life in the water. This scene is far more important and profound than it first appears, because according to the film’s story, you’ve just witnessed the creation of humankind. Those tiny seeds you saw symbolize our existence. As you know, both philosophy and science treat water as synonymous with life; it’s often said that after the Big Bang, life found its spark through water. So this isn’t entirely foreign to us.
