Amongst Eastern Giants - Dayhike in Fitzroy Provincial Park

Join my dog, Jasper, and I as we discover giant trees, climb limestone rock formations and visit a gorgeous cascading waterfall in Eastern Ontario's Fitzroy Provincial Park.

Fitzroy Provincial Park is situated within Ottawa city limits and is less than an hour from downtown. Situated at the confluence of the meandering Carp River and mighty Ottawa River, this 198.4 hectare park protects centuries-old eastern white pine, red maple and hemlock, and three-century old bur oaks.

Jasper and I visit in spring, when the park is still closed for the season. Access by foot is permitted, so we hike in and discover some of its neatest features: centuries-old trees, limestone rock formations and a gorgeous, cascading waterfall! We were also lucky enough to spot some great wildlife!

Travelling the park's Carp Trail, we visit the largest eastern white pine in the park – I likened the tree to Sequoia National Park's immense sequoia, General Sherman. Now, Fitzroy's tree has nothing on the General, but it's still a majestic tree that I thought would be worthy of a great name. With some research, I thought Shirreff would be fitting, named after Charles Shirreff, the founder of Fitzroy Harbour, the small town with which the park shares its namesake. Charles Shirreff and his family were instrumental in developing the lumber trade along this section of the Ottawa River. Of course, like many great industrialists, some controversy erupted over how Ottawa Valley lumber was processed further downriver in Quebec City, but what role the Shirreff's played in this is not well known due to limited recordkeeping. Regardless, I think that given the family's role in the founding of Fitzroy Harbour, naming this old tree after them seems appropriate! Who knows, maybe this old tree even knew the Shirreff's!?!
