History is full of untold tragedies, and the story of Kung’u Karumba, one of Kenya’s independence heroes, is among the most haunting. Karumba was part of the Kapenguria Six, the group that included Jomo Kenyatta and other nationalist leaders who defied British colonial rule in the 1950s. After independence, Karumba turned to business, but his fate would tragically be sealed not in Kenya, but across the border in Uganda, under the brutal regime of Idi Amin.
In 1974, Karumba traveled to Uganda to pursue a business deal with powerful figures in Amin’s government. Among those he dealt with was General Isaac Maliyamungu, infamous as Amin’s most feared enforcer. Known for his ruthlessness, Maliyamungu had a reputation for eliminating anyone who stood in his way. When Karumba pressed too hard for the repayment of debts or guarantees related to their dealings, he crossed a dangerous line.
Maliyamungu lured Karumba into a trap, and the Kenyan hero disappeared without a trace. Witnesses later revealed that Karumba was executed on Maliyamungu’s orders, possibly strangled or shot, with his body dumped secretly — some say in the River Nile, others in a remote military site. His remains have never been found, leaving his family and his country in painful uncertainty.
The death of Kung’u Karumba was not just the silencing of a businessman. It was a shocking reminder that Idi Amin’s Uganda could extend its brutality beyond its borders. For Kenyans, it was a devastating loss — a hero of the independence struggle betrayed in peacetime. For Ugandans, it was yet another example of the unchecked terror carried out by Amin’s loyalists like Maliyamungu.
This story raises deeper questions about the price of power, greed, and betrayal in Africa’s post-independence history. It highlights how one man’s pursuit of justice in a business deal turned into a political murder with international consequences.
Kung’u Karumba’s story remains an open wound in Kenya’s history, but also a testament to the dangers faced by those who stood too close to Amin’s circle. Though Maliyamungu himself was later killed in 1979, the mystery of Karumba’s disappearance endures. His legacy, however, lives on — as a reminder of Kenya’s long fight for freedom, and the sacrifices its heroes paid, even after independence.
