📍 Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental Hotel

Located at the foot of Sheshan Mountain in Songjiang District, Shanghai, the Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental Hotel is the world’s first luxury hotel built inside an abandoned quarry — praised as one of the “Architectural Wonders of the World.”

Uniquely designed to blend with an 88-meter-deep rock pit, the hotel has only two floors above ground and sixteen floors extending downwards along the quarry wall, with two floors even submerged underwater, offering spectacular underwater rooms and an aquarium view.

Designed by renowned British architect Martin Jochman and his team, the hotel took 12 years to complete and opened to the public in 2018. It has become an icon of ecological restoration and sustainable design, transforming a deserted industrial site into a vertical luxury resort.

Today, this “Deep Pit Hotel” attracts curious travelers and architecture enthusiasts from all over the world to experience its unique story and breathtaking design.

Yuhuo Restaurant is uniquely located 88 meters below sea level inside a deep quarry pit, offering a one-of-a-kind underwater dining experience. The restaurant features a rich variety of seafood and Western cuisine, surrounded by over 5,000 fish from 57 different species, including rare types such as black stingrays and golden trevally, creating an immersive aquarium-like atmosphere for guests.
Among the special marine residents are nurse sharks, blacktip sharks, and the so-called “world’s laziest fish” — the suction cup shark, which have become popular attractions. Jellyfish float gracefully under changing lights, adding a mysterious and dreamlike vibe to the underwater setting.
