DIY Humpty Dumpty Using a Balloon
Hi, in this video I show you how I made the cute Humpty Dumpty character using a balloon, tin foil from a chocolate and some cardboard. The only bought materials are the colors, the hot glue and the P.V.A. glue. It took me about five days to finish, including the drying time. This is a creative way to teach children about recycling and also stimulate their imagination.
I started by making the paper clay from the cardboard. It is really easy and cheap to make because we only use two ingredients: cardboard and P.V.A. glue (polyvinyl acetate glue, commonly referred to as wood glue, white glue, carpenter's glue, school glue, Elmer's glue in the US). I used an old blender to make it really smooth. I tear the cardboard to pieces and place them in the blender. I add hot water over the cardboard pieces and start the blender. When it looks like a homogeneous mix I squeeze the water out trough a sieve. You should squeeze as much water as you can. I then add the glue. I used about three tablespoons of P.V.A. glue in the mix you saw, but you should add one spoon at a time and mix it to see if it has the consistency you want, and keep adding glue until the paste is the way you want it to be. Make small batches so you don't make more than you need.
I covered the whole balloon with a thin layer of paper clay(approx. 2 mm). I let it dry and drew the face and details of the character on the balloon. I made the nose and mouth using tinfoil(you can recycle your tinfoil from chocolate and other similar products). I also added cardboard details like a neckband and a hat. The hands and feet were made using the wire from a metal hanger. I added some thickness using cardboard around the wires. I covered all the new details with paper clay. I sanded the surface a little bit before painting. I painted it using acrylic paint. I first covered the whole character with the base colors for each element. Then I started adding shadows using diluted darker acrylics. In the end I made some lights here and there to brighten the surfaces. This decorative piece can be displayed on the edge of a books shelf in the children's room.
