Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) hosted its Grand Opening celebration, marking the completion of Georgia’s largest economic development project just two and a half years after breaking ground. Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung emphasized that HMGMA represents the company’s advanced manufacturing capabilities, commitment to innovation, and strong partnerships within Georgia. Governor Brian P. Kemp highlighted the plant’s positive impact on the state’s economy, workforce training, and infrastructure.
Hyundai entered an agreement with Georgia in May 2022 to establish an advanced electric and hybrid vehicle production and battery manufacturing facility in Ellabell, Georgia. HMGMA was officially formed in June 2022, and by October 2024, the first Hyundai IONIQ 5 rolled off the assembly line. The IONIQ 9 three-row electric SUV is now in production, with a Kia model set to join in 2026. The plant is capable of producing both electric and hybrid vehicles, with an initial annual capacity of 300,000 units.
Hyundai Motor Group has invested $12.6 billion in Georgia for HMGMA and joint battery ventures, the largest single investment in the state’s history. By 2031, HMGMA will employ 8,500 people, contributing to nearly 40,000 direct and indirect jobs and $4.6 billion in annual earnings. As of late 2024, HMGMA suppliers have announced over $2.5 billion in capital investment and 6,900 jobs across 12 counties.
To date, Hyundai Motor Group has invested over $20.5 billion in the U.S., supporting more than 570,000 jobs nationwide. The company recently announced a $21 billion U.S. investment from 2025 to 2028. Of this, $9 billion will expand production capacity to 1.2 million vehicles annually, increasing HMGMA’s capacity to 500,000 units. Hyundai’s Alabama and Kia’s Georgia plants will also receive upgrades. Another $6 billion will support parts, logistics, and an Electric Arc Furnace-based steel mill to supply high-quality automotive steel by 2029. Another $6 billion will go toward innovation in autonomous driving, robotics, AI, and advanced air mobility, creating 14,000 new jobs and over 100,000 indirect opportunities.
HMGMA integrates AI, robotics, and real-time data to optimize manufacturing. The facility uses automated guided vehicles, Boston Dynamic’s Spot robot for quality inspection, and parking robots. Automation in the assembly shop is nearly double that of Hyundai’s other plants. The plant’s design focuses on employee well-being, with open layouts, natural lighting, and collaborative spaces. A solar parking lot generates 5.2 megawatts of energy, covering five percent of the facility’s power needs. A 41-acre ecological park is also being developed for employees.
HMGMA has deployed 21 Hyundai XCIENT hydrogen fuel-cell electric trucks for logistics, making up over a third of the Glovis America truck fleet. This initiative supports sustainability and reduces the company’s carbon footprint.
Hyundai has invested $4.5 million in Georgia’s community initiatives, focusing on education, safety, and sustainability. Kia’s Autoland Georgia factory has contributed over $22 million since 2009, with $6 million dedicated to educational programs.
