From https://www.rojodojo.com my #bujinkan #martialarts video exploring the kata 霞雷 karai. You can think of this
like a lightning strike in the mist. The students who felt my strike
emerge from the mist can definitely make that association!
Hatsumi Sensei showed a particular way to manipulate the wrist when
the attacker grabs. This is what opens up the target for your strike.
But it also sets up the shoulder control.
The shoulder control in this kata should be dynamic. I suggest not
grabbing. Instead, allow the hand to slide around the joint and even
down the arm. As the opponent’s balance shifts, this create multiple
force vectors that he cannot keep pace with.
This is one of those techniques where you may let your opponent take
ukemi. Give him an out. As he takes it, he falls right into your trap…
and a broken arm!
But, it is important not to try to take the shoulder directly. The
opponent will be able to respond to this. Instead, let the hand cross
his eyes like metsubushi. It may even check the other hand or use a type
of @n-kata-hosoku-2/.
I shared two different grips for the covering hand as it picks up the wrist. Each of these opens up the opponent’s body for the “lightning in the mist.”
In the process of breaking 腕関節 wankansetsu, you create a reaction up
the arm. Then when you enter to pick up the shoulder, the arm collapses.
I added a strike across the throat with a 手起拳 shuki ken when I entered
on the shoulder.
Next I showed the same process starting with an ura take ori. This
hides your strike under the opponent’s own arm. From here the control of
the shoulder can be a bit different.
Some students were confused by this. So I changed to receive a punch
to take their mind out of “grappling” mode. Now, with just shifting the
arm in the space, you may wrap up the attacker. His arm takes the form
of 大逆 Ōgyaku as your own hand spears towards his shoulder. Then simple
Bujinkan taijutsu will throw him.
I added a henka using Bujinkan rokushakubo vs a knife or kodachi.
First, the bo becomes your surrogate in the space. It replaces your body
and angles across the attacker’s only approach. Then the bo whirls like
an airplane propeller with 3 distinct strikes to disarm.
