Our second tower on my outing to the Bishop's Stortford area.
We arrived at Hatfield Broad Oak with seven of us, hoping to at least ring the back six. We were then told that we couldn't, because the ill advised PCC has banned ringing the 17 cwt tenor for the foreseeable future. Their argument is that the tenor is causing vibrations in the tower, which has resulted in cracks in the walls and falling masonry. This is all according to the 'local architect', but we couldn't find any strong evidence of this whilst we were there. They've clearly been given some duff advice. The PCC currently allows only bells 1-6 to be rung, but I was not allowing any 1-6 on this trip, and rightly so.
What we did find, however, was an incredibly filthy ringing room, which looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. all eight ropes (which originally came from nearby Bishop's Stortford) were incredibly stiff and the sallies were unbelievably damp. This made raising the bells very uncomfortable, physically.
