The Royal Variety is already chaos in the best way. It’s like someone took your Spotify playlists, a West End program, a stand-up night, and a dad-joke marathon, threw them in a blender, and poured it out at the Royal Albert Hall once a year.
This year, though, the main event wasn’t the stage. It was the royal entrance.
Because after nearly two years without a big red-carpet moment together, who strolls up the steps of the Royal Albert Hall?
Jessie J knew exactly what she wasn’t supposed to do. But the script goes out the window and they hug. It’s quick, it’s gentle, but you can see it: it’s not performative; it’s a “we’ve both been through it” hug. Two women, two mums, two people who know what chemo feels like, in a corridor with cameras and protocol and expectations, choosing to be human for a second.
What I love about the Royal Variety this year is that it does what theatre and film do best: it lets you look at power and pain and image and performance without anyone ever needing to say, “This is what we’re doing.”
The show itself is noisy, full of jokes and big notes and costume changes.
But the moment everyone remembers is the quiet one in the hallway.
Not a punchline.
Not a standing ovation.
Just two women who know what it feels like to have their bodies and their futures suddenly yanked out from under them, sharing five seconds of unscripted contact.
And it just happens to be between a global pop star and the future queen.
