Vreni Schneider was leading the 1st run comfortably ahead of Ingrid Salvenmoser by 0,38 seconds, Nataša Bokal of Slovenia (Yugoslavia at the time) was only 9th and 1,03 seconds behind. Bokal had blistering 2nd run as Schneider lost almost a second and was barely able to defend gold medal. Schneider won her first slalom gold after winning two giantslalom crowns in 1987 and 1989
