Metro Ethernet (MEN) – Refers to a metropolitan area network (MAN) that uses Carrier Ethernet technology to connect business and subscriber sites across a city or region. It supports multiple services like E-Line and E-LAN.
Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC) – A logical association defined by the MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum) that connects two or more User Network Interfaces (UNIs). It’s fundamental to service types like E-Line (point-to-point) and E-LAN (multipoint-to-multipoint).
Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) – A set of standardized tools and protocols used for fault detection, performance monitoring, and troubleshooting in Carrier Ethernet networks (e.g., IEEE 802.1ag, ITU-T Y.1731).
Service Level Agreement (SLA) – A formal contract that specifies the performance guarantees of a Carrier Ethernet service — such as latency, jitter, packet loss, and availability. SLAs are enforced using OAM tools.
Multiprotocol Label Switching Transport Profile (MPLS-TP) – A transport-oriented variant of MPLS that provides carrier-grade reliability and OAM capabilities, often used to deliver Carrier Ethernet services over a packet-based infrastructure.
