"I never wanted to become this.

That’s a lie. I did. But I didn’t know what it would cost.

When you’re a goblin, the world sees you as something small and fleeting. Our lives burn short, bright like sparks in the dark, and are just as easily snuffed out. That wasn’t enough for me. I was tired of being nothing more than a footnote in some dwarven bard’s tale of conquest, a smear of blood on a warrior’s blade. I wanted more.

The orb promised me more.

It wasn’t much to look at then, just a cracked piece of obsidian that fit in the palm of my hand. I found it in the depths of an old ruin, its edges sharp enough to cut me as I pulled it free from the rubble. The glow came later, after I fed it.

Blood first. Then bone. Then... other things.

I didn’t know what it was at first. Not really. It whispered to me in dreams, promising life beyond life, power beyond the constraints of flesh. And I was foolish enough to listen.

The ritual was... intimate. The words it gave me didn’t come from any book, and the tools were simple—my knife, the orb, and my dying breath. The pain was brief, but the tearing was endless, like peeling a shadow from my skin. I could feel my soul stretching, snapping free, leaving behind the frail shell that had been my body.

Then the orb consumed me.

I woke hours later—or perhaps days—in a body that was mine but wasn’t. My skin clung tighter to my bones, cracked and dried like old leather. My eyes no longer blinked, and my chest didn’t rise with breath. But I was alive. Or something close to it.

The orb sat in my hands, glowing faintly with green fire, pulsing with my soul trapped inside. I felt it tethered to me, an extension of my very being. It whispered again, not in promises this time, but in warnings.

Guard me, it said, for I am you now.

I learned quickly what it meant. My body, though strong, was fragile. A sword to the gut wouldn’t kill me—not permanently. But if the orb was shattered, so was I. Completely. Irrevocably.

So I hid it, deep within the ruins I now called home. I surrounded it with traps, with spells, with guardians made from the bones of those who sought to claim it. I fed on their souls when I could, growing stronger, but the hunger never left.

I don’t know how many years have passed since I bound myself to the orb. Decades? Centuries? It doesn’t matter. Time drips away like water through a crack in the stone, and still, I linger. My body rots, but the orb keeps me tethered. My mind frays, but my will endures.

I wanted to be remembered. I wanted power.

Now, I am nothing more than a shadow, an undead goblin haunting the halls of a forgotten dungeon, guarding the thing that is both my salvation and my curse. The orb glows brighter when I touch it, its heat a reminder of what I gave up and what I became.

They come sometimes, adventurers, treasure hunters, fools. They seek to destroy me, thinking I am the prize. They don’t realize the truth until it’s too late. Until their blood fuels my strength and their bones join my walls.

The orb hums as I sit beside it, its glow my only light. It keeps me company, whispers to me still, a soft lullaby of power and eternity.

And I guard it. Because it is me."
