This is the 63rd tour of our series, THE REAL TOURS, in which we provide an in the moment glimpse into a place with off-the-cuff commentary completely intact! No research, no script, just RRR letting you in on their insights and observations walking the malls.
The Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach, VA is the clear winner in the enclosed retail game in the Hampton Roads/Norfolk area. An area that used to have many malls relatively close to each other, now is pretty much dominated by the Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News and this one. Despite this, people over a certain age who are from the area might give you a nasty look when bringing this mall up. It used to be everything that made a cool 1980s mall, with dark brown tiled floors, lots of vegetation, fountains, and an aesthetic center court/second floor that no longer exists. Developed by Melvin Simon & Associates in 1981, the mall was purchased by General Growth Properties (GGP) in 2001 and GGP made sure to give the mall a thorough treatment of modern white blandness. What was once a pleasure to visit is now just a place where the stuff is.
