"Batalha de Lepanto" ‐ Catholic Portuguese ballad of LEPANTO BATTLE (LYRICS + Translation)

The ballad of the "Battle of Lepanto", is a 16th century tale that originated in the said battle, which, for the european Catholics, was decisive as the final triumph of the christian religion over the Ottoman ruin. In fact, the two empires of the Iberian Peninsula romanticised in their own way the event that had dazzled the imagination of their people, so much so that the popularity of the battle is notorious within the traditional songs. In the portuguese territory, the novel itself is quite widespread, however, this version seems to correspond to the Azorean oral tradition, which is much more complete and similar to the original prototype "De Sicilia con poder".

This version begins with a lyrical passage in praise of the captain (0:13), who is King John of Austria, commander of the Christian League. The battle then starts, and as the ship prepares to leave around noon, the captain commands the topman to report on the battle's outcomes (1:04). He then orders King John to prepare the artillery, revealing that a fleet of incredible proportions arrived, belonging to Ali Paxa himself (1:31). In this version it's omitted, but afterwards King John goes from galley to galley just before the battle, encouraging his men with a crucifix in his left hand and a foil in the other. After all the fleets arrived at noon, the battle finally begins (2:12) and it ends with King John firing on the enemy (2:36). The condensed but graphic description of the battle states that so much blood was shed that it leaked out of the vessels and that there were many deaths (2:43). It finally ends with all the Turkish forces being destroyed (about seven hundred and eighty ships), except for a single Turkish fleet, the Uluch Ali, (2:53).

Despite the compressions, interpolations, contaminations, displacements and other vicissitudes that characterise the transmission of the battle, it is still possible to find several versions of this ballad, which have survived in the Portuguese oral tradition. And so the ballad of the Battle of Lepanto, which in itself is extremely rare, constitutes an even rarer example of the traditionalization of one of those long and prosaic historical ballads written in the second half of the sixteenth century.

O romance da "Batalha de Lepanto" ou de "D. João da Armada", trata-se de um romance do século XVI com origem na dita batalha, que para os católicos, foi decisiva para o triunfo definitivo da religião sobre a ruína otomana. De facto, os dois povos da Península Ibérica romancearam a seu modo o feito que lhes deslumbrara a imaginação, tanto que a popularidade da batalha de Lepanto é notória nas coplas da tradição. No território português, o romance é bastante difundido, mas esta versão parece corresponder à tradição oral açoriana, que é muito mais completa e semelhante ao protótipo original "De Sicilia con poder".

Esta versão começa com uma passagem lírica em louvor do capitão (0:13), que é o rei João de Áustria, comandante da Liga Cristã. A batalha começa então e, quando o navio se prepara para partir por volta do meio-dia, o gajeiro ordena ao capitão que informe sobre os resultados da batalha (1:04). De seguida, ordena a D. João que prepare a artilharia, revelando que chegou uma armada de proporções incríveis, pertencente ao próprio Ali Paxa (1:31). Nesta versão é omitida, mas em seguida D. João vai de galé em galé pouco antes da batalha, encorajando os seus homens com um crucifixo na mão esquerda e um florete na outra mão. Após a chegada de todas as armadas ao meio-dia, a batalha começa finalmente (2:12) e termina com D. João a disparar sobre o inimigo (2:36). A descrição condensada, mas gráfica da batalha afirma que tanto sangue foi derramado que escorria pelos navio fora e de que havia muitos mortos (2:43). Finalmente termina com todas as forças turcas sendo destruídas (cerca de setecentos e oitenta navios), com exceção de um único navio turco, o Uluch Ali, (2:53).

Apesar das compressões, interpolações, contaminações, deslocamentos e outras vicissitudes que caracterizam a transmissão da batalha, ainda é possível encontrar várias versões desta balada, que sobreviveram na tradição oral portuguesa. E assim o romance da Batalha de Lepanto, que em si é extremamente raro, constitui um exemplo ainda raro da "tradicionalização" de uma daquelas longas e prosaicas baladas históricas escritas na segunda metade do século XVI.
