No abbreviation directions for beginners:
Round 1: Start with a slip knot
Chain 3. Join with a slip stitch to the first chain. Chain 5 (counts as double crochet and chain 2 throughout). In the center of the ring [3 double crochet, chain 2] 3 times. 2 more double crochet in the center of the ring and join with a slip stitch in chain 5 space.
You may attach a different color if desired in the opposite corner space from where you last slip stitched.
Round 2: Chain 5. In chain 2 space, 3 double crochets. [In next chain 2 space (3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet)] 3 times. In the first chain 2 space make 2 double crochets. Join with a slip stitch in chain 5 space.
You may attach a different color if desired in the opposite corner space from where you last slip stitched.
Round 3: Chain 5. In chain 2 space, 3 double crochets. *In space between next 2 double crochet clusters, 3 double crochets. In next chain 2 space (3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet).
