This film was produced and planned by Tsai-Chien Chiang, the author of "The Biography of Chien-Shiung Wu". It offers an in-depth exploration of the extraordinary life of physicist Chien-Shiung Wu, from her childhood in the small town of Liuhe in Jiangnan to her pursuit of advanced studies in the United States, where she achieved groundbreaking scientific accomplishments.
The film highlights her pivotal contribution to the discovery of parity violation in physics, and delves into the controversy surrounding why she did not share the Nobel Prize with her male colleagues. It also portrays her independent spirit and unwavering determination, as well as the gender discrimination she faced as a female scientist. Ultimately, she secured a place of great esteem in the scientific community, earning the title “First Lady of Physics.”
Chien-Shiung Wu is recognized as one of the greatest female experimental physicists in the world, often referred to as “China’s Madame Curie.” She participated in the world-altering Manhattan Project and worked alongside J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “father of the atomic bomb.” Most notably, she was the first to experimentally verify the theoretical hypothesis proposed by Chen-Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee, which later earned them the Nobel Prize and marked the beginning of the "symmetry revolution" in physics.
She shattered a century-old precedent at Princeton University by becoming the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from the institution. She was also the first female president in the history of the American Physical Society. Prestigious honors such as Israel’s Wolf Prize, the Comstock Prize of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and the National Medal of Science awarded by the White House, only begin to reflect the breadth of her achievements. Long past the need for a Nobel Prize, Chien-Shiung Wu herself became a legend admired by many Nobel laureates—some of whom believe her contributions to science even surpassed those of Madame Curie.
