드뷔시의 시링크스는 단 한 대의 플루트로 신화의 한 장면을 조용히 불러내는 작품입니다.
1913년에 작곡된 이 곡은 그리스 신화 속 목신 판과 요정 시링크스의 이야기에서 출발합니다.

숲속에서 판의 추격을 받던 시링크스는 끝내 강가에 이르고, 더 이상 도망칠 수 없음을 깨닫습니다.
그 순간, 그녀는 강의 신에게 도움을 청합니다.
기도에 응답하듯 시링크스의 몸은 물가의 갈대로 변하고, 그녀의 존재는 소리 없는 흔적으로 남습니다.
판이 손에 쥔 것은 더 이상 요정이 아니라 바람에 흔들리는 갈대였습니다.
그는 그 갈대를 엮어 피리를 만들고, 그곳에서 흘러나올 소리를 떠올리며 작곡한 곡이 바로 시링크스입니다.

이 음악은 추격도, 변신도 직접적으로 묘사하지 않습니다.
사라진 이후의 시간, 강 위에 남은 공기와 숨결, 그리고 잔향만을 조용히 비춥니다.

음과 음 사이의 침묵, 미세한 음색의 변화, 공기가 닿는 방향이 곡의 중심이 됩니다.

Hello everyone,

Today, I would like to introduce one of the most iconic solo flute works by Claude Debussy, Syrinx.

Debussy’s Syrinx is a piece that quietly evokes a single scene from mythology using only one flute.

Composed in 1913, the work is rooted in the Greek myth of the god Pan and the nymph Syrinx.

While fleeing from Pan through the forest, Syrinx eventually reaches the river and realizes she can run no further.
In that moment, she calls upon the river god for help.
As if answering her prayer, Syrinx is transformed into reeds along the water’s edge, and her existence remains only as a silent trace.
What Pan holds in his hands is no longer the nymph herself, but reeds swaying in the wind.


From these reeds, he fashions a flute, and imagining the sound that would emerge from it, Debussy composed Syrinx.


This music does not directly depict the chase or the transformation.
Instead, it gently illuminates what comes after disappearance: the air above the river, the breath, and the lingering resonance.


Silence between notes, subtle shifts in tone color, and the direction of the air stream form the true core of the piece.
For this reason, Syrinx is not a work of virtuosic display, but a music of presence, focus, and endurance in disappearance.
The piece also marks an important turning point in the flute repertoire.
It elevates the flute’s own breath and texture into the very center of artistic expression.


The performer becomes Pan, the reeds, and at the same time, the memory of Syrinx who vanished into the river.
In this performance, I aim not to explain the story, but to capture the atmosphere that remains afterward.
