Dr. Allyson Pollock is joining our own Executive Director, Natalie Mehra, and the President of OCHU/CUPE, Michael Hurley, for this high level briefing on the experience of privatizing public hospital services in the UK.
They are about 15 years ahead of us, and we can now see exactly what happened.
Interestingly, while England expanded privatization, Scotland stopped it, giving a side-by-side real life example of what happens when you privatize vs what happens when governments choose to expand services in public hospitals.
About Dr. Pollock: Dr. Allyson Pollock is a physician and clinical professor of public health at Newcastle University. She did the seminal work more than 2 decades ago on P3 privatization of hospitals, which is a form of privatizing the construction of new hospitals that redirected billions of dollars away from care to construction companies, consulting companies, service privatizers and the like. That warning from Britain proved salient and her work informed the first warnings and critiques of P3 hospital privatization in Canada, all of which have come true. Now, we’re bringing Dr. Pollock back and this time she’s bringing a warning about private surgical clinics.
