Kumaraparvatha Monsoon Trekking, The Most Difficult and Beautifully trekking in Karnataka

Kumara Parvatha is situated in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Kumara Parvatha is the second highest peak in Kodagu district, only after Tadiandamol and the fourth highest peak in Karnataka.

There was 2 reason for trekking to Kumara Parvatha (Pushapgiri Hills) this time
One, I am doing a Himalayan trekking (Gangotri – Tapovan ) during 2nd week of June 2002 and very badly wanted to da practice trek before the mighty and challenging Himalayan trekking. Kumara Parvatha is one of the best endurance trekking to test your stamina. And after completing this KP trekking, I was more confident than earlier to carry out my next Himalayan trekking
Second, It was environment day on 05 June 2022 and noting is better to be in nature on this environment day. The forest officials, Puneet and Vamshi at Girighadde Forest Check Post requested our team to return back to the check post on day 2 before 11am for a tree plantation however since it rained heavily last night the entire trail to the peak was slippery and we could not able return back on time and missed the tree plantation event along with GiriGhadde Forest officials.

Our Itinerary
Day 1 – 4th June, 2022 (Saturday)
05:30 AM – Start from Kengeri, Bangalore (Breakfast on the way)
11:30 AM – Reached Kukke Subramanya, Blessed with lord Subramanya, had prasad at Temple
02:40 PM – Started our trekk to GiriGhadde Bhatru Mane
06:15 AM – Reached Girigghadde Bhatru Mane. Dinner and Night Stay at Bhatru Mane

Day 2
05:30 AM - Wake up & freshen up
06:10 AM – Registration, trek fee payment, and account of plastic bags and bottles carried with us at Girighadde Forest Check post 06:30AM – Start trek to the peak
10:10 AM - Reach the peak (Had a homecooked Breakfast on the Peak)
02:00 AM – Reach Bhattarmane (Lunch)
03:00 PM - Trek down to Kukke Subramanya
05:20 PM - Reach Kukke Subramanya base & freshen up
06:30 PM - Start back to Bangalore
11:40 PM – Reached Bangalore

Best time for KP Trekking:
Monsoon Time: June to August - If we love to trek in rain and get leach bites. However, check with Forest officials for trekking permission if there is heavy rain.
Post monsoon:
Sept & Oct - If you like to see the lush green carpet
Nov, Dec & Jan - The grass would have turned to grey but still can witness the cloud formation on top of KP
Avoid Summertime - Feb to May (check with Forest officials for trekking permission due to summer forest fire season)

About Kumara Parvatha Trekking:
There are 2 routes through which one can can climb the Kumara Parvatha (Pushpa Giri Hills). One you Somwarpet side and another from Kukke Subramanya Side. Comparatively trekking from Somwarpet side is much easier then Kukke Subramanya side.

Trekking from Somwarpet:
Distance from Bangalore to Somwarpet: 240kms – There are few KSRTC overnight bus services. Journey time is around 6 hrs. A small village called Beedhalli is base – trek start point to Kumara Parvatha. The distance from Somwarpet to Beedhalli is around 22 kms and only a couple of buses commute between Somwarpet to Beedhalli. If you are a group of 5 to 6 people then you can check for jeep service at Somwarpet Bus stand. The trekking fee has to be paid at the Forest check post on the way. Trekking distance from Beedhalli to the peak is around 8kms. The trail mostly passes through thick forest cover. What it means is you will not be exposed to the hot sun (it's really hot to trek in open), thanks to the forest canopy most of the distances till the peak from Beedehalli forest check-post. You can also choose to descend down to GiriGhadde, Kukke Subramanya side but you need to inform the same at the check post and take prior permission.

Trekking from Kukke Subramanya Side:
The story is quite different on the Subrahmaniya side. The first 6½ km is through thickly wooded forest cover, and is pretty steep too. Then you'll enter open grassland terrain, still with a steep gradient to scale. You'll get the forest canopy cover only towards the last 2km to the KP Peak. Doing this under the scorching sun is no mean thing. The trail zigzags its way practically though the bare undulating highland, with a strong headwind to drag your energy.

The 14km trail from Kukke to Kumara Parvatha peak is all about scaling 1½km (about 1500 m/4930 feet) in elevation. From the Beedehalli you'll reach the Kumara Parvatha peak after 600 meters of elevation over a 7km long trek. That's Beedehalli is already at an elevation of 1100 meters, where as Kukke is about 140 meters.
