Transplant nurse coordinators work closely with each patient from the time of evaluation before transplant, through approval for the transplant wait list, placing the call that an organ is available, and educating the patient about anti-rejection medications in the hospital after their transplant. Nurse coordinators work with living donors and recipients to ensure each patient receives a thorough medical, physical and mental health work-up and is adequately prepared to pursue living donation or to receive a new organ and take care of that new organ for many years after transplantation.
