Ngl, I hate mage bossing, and if I didnt have Snow Spirit or Bolt Barrage, the run was gonna take much longer. Mages can nuke most mobs relatively safely, the only real hiccup is Horus for me bc of his tackle and forcing you closer to his giant circle of bullets. Outside that the runs are pretty cake, but now looking to do a pirate run last and finish up any last Challenge mode missions I have left yet to accomplish.
Explosion, Thunder Strike (or ice?) are both alright but pretty limited range
Heat Wave and Flame sweep are decent forward mobbers if you dont have a good charge spot, or trying to jump and hit something. Decent tool
Bolt Barrage, Snow Spirit are two of my favorites as they destroy and do big dps, Bolt is more situational if you can get the boss in a corner.
Staff Sweet is also a good go to for mobbing and bossing, it does decent damage, has a huge vertical hitbox, doesnt require charging so good hit and run, etc.
If you are planning to do mage, same with archer, your going to need really good hands so prepare yourself. Archer took me all 10 runs to get a good run out of them, Mage only took like I think 3 or 4 to get something that would work.
