Today we are visiting a humble and generous eatery in Malbhat, Margao. It's a really small hole-in-the-wall place, so small that you can easily drive past it. But my friend told me that the fish curry is really like home made-style, excellent. There’s one aunty there. She’s been cooking there for many years. Don’t expect anything fancy. No frills, only food.

To get to Laxmi, take the turn going down to Victor Hospital and Margao railway station from the Carmelite Monastery on Martires Dias Road. Just before you reach the skywalk connecting the two wings of Victor Hospital, you will see Laxmi hotel on your right. It is located in the same building as All Seasons guest house.

Laxmi is a woman-owned business, run by a mother and son duo. The Kaskar family has been serving workers and office-goers at this eatery in Margao’s Malbhat for the past 20 years. The mother cooks and manages the accounts. Her son takes orders from customers, serves them the cooked food and generally helps his mother.

There is both upstairs and downstairs seating at Laxmi. There are just three tables downstairs, which tend to be shared at lunchtime. This no-fuss, no-nonsense place is absolutely packed at lunch time. We arrived around 12.45 and took the last free table downstairs, under the staircase, because we wanted to be near the smells and sounds of the kitchen. By 1.15 pm, all tables, both upstairs and downstairs, were taken. But fortunately due to the sensible table-sharing culture here, no one had to wait for their lunch.

Today I’m having a bangdo (mackerel) thali (Rs 140) and Maria had a prawns thali (Rs 230). Other thalis available, depending on the catch of the day, are lepo (sole fish/ Rs 130), prawns Rs 230, modso Rs 150, chicken Rs 160, veg Rs 80. The king fish thali rate depends on the market rate of kingfish that day. Other breakfast and snack items are bhaji pao Rs 40, ros omelette with two bread Rs 50, chappati Rs 60, chicken xacuti with two bread Rs 110 and shell fish sukha Rs 60.

Do try out Laxmi Hotel next time you are shopping in New Market, Pajifond or Malbhat. It’s a small place, but with a very big heart.
