The stepwells or baoli are not only a significant source of water but also hold strong cultural significance, with architectural brilliance linking them to the cylindrical well that helped to recharge the water table.
The history of stepwells
Rudimentary stepwells first appeared in India in the 3rd century CE, born of necessity in a capricious monsoonal climate zone that is bone-dry for much of the year yet drenched by torrential rains for many weeks. It was essential to guarantee a year-round water supply for human needs, particularly in the arid regions of northwestern India, where the water table could be inconveniently buried 10 stories underground. Over the centuries, stepwell design evolved into astoundingly complex structures.

This video captures the incredible beauty of Gadhi Jhiriya Baoli, which resembles the structure of the fort, hence its name. The water was used for bathing, irrigation, and washing clothes. It is located 25 km away from Pindrai road, Gram Panchayat Jhiriya, Nainpur Block. It was once used by the queens of the Gond kingdom for their recreation and bathing. Now, it is a pious site where their deity, Bihar Mata, is seated, and the place is generally crowded by locals during the Navratri festival. Bihar Mata is associated with the forest and nature, as described by the locals of the Jhiriya Gram Panchayat. There is an annual fair organized during the Mahashivaratri by the community members of the Jhiriya village la.
