The Brick: Bodega Chronicles: Released April 24, 2007
A remix of Joell Ortiz’s original “Hip-Hop”, featured on GTA IV on 29 April 2008.
Joell Christopher Ortiz was born to Puerto Rican parents in Brooklyn, New York on July 6, 1980, where he grew up in East Williamsburg.
He was formerly signed to Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment record label.
He was featured in the Unsigned Hype column of the March 2004 issue of The Source Magazine and was also selected as Chairman's Choice in XXL Magazine.
During the same time Joell also went on to win the 2004 EA Sports Battle which earned his song "Mean Business" a spot on the NBA Live 2005 soundtrack.
The same year he was offered a contract to Jermaine Dupri's So So Def label.
The deal quickly went sour which caused Joell to start beef with Jermaine. Joell has since collaborated with KRS-One and Kool G. Rap.
Joell released his street album called The Brick: Bodega Chronicles April 24, 2007, on Koch Records.
The album was recorded while Joell was trying to get signed and going through some tough times personally.
Although he was signed to Aftermath Entertainment, Dr. Dre allowed him to release the street album on Koch Records.
The Brick features production by Showbiz, The Alchemist, Domingo, Ho Chi from Killahertz Productions, Lil' Fame of M.O.P., Novel, and Moss, among others.
Guest spots include Big Daddy Kane, Styles P, Big Noyd, M.O.P, Akon, Immortal Technique, Grafh, Ras Kass, Stimuli, and Novel.
Ortiz is one quarter of the Supergroup Slaughterhouse (Which consisted of rappers Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I and Royce da 5'9") who released their highly anticipated Slaughterhouse EP on February 8, 2011.
The group released their second studio album, Welcome to: Our House, on August 28, 2012
In September 2018, Eminem released a four-part interview with Sway Calloway on his YouTube channel explaining the reasons why the group had a downfall.
Where we had left it, about two years ago, was everybody came in, and some of the guys in the group picked certain beats, some of guys didn't feel those beats [...] There was definitely enough songs to put an album out, but for the most part, it wasn't a complete picture, because everybody wasn't on the same page of what their favorite songs were.
So I thought they were gonna go back, regroup, and try to make few more songs.[...] Joe said 'Slaughterhouse ain't hot right now, we don't have a buzz, we need to put out a mixtape.' From that point, everybody started branching out, Royce went and did his album, PRhyme, everybody started doing their own solo shit.
In January 2020, former group members Royce da 5'9", Crooked I, and Joell Ortiz were featured on Eminem's eleventh studio album, Music to Be Murdered By, on the track "I Will".
In February 2022, Crooked I and Joell Ortiz announced a collaborative studio album titled Rise & Fall of Slaughterhouse, in which they addressed the group's fallout from their own perspectives.
Royce da 5'9" and Joe Budden were displeased with the project, as they viewed it as an attempt to tear down the Slaughterhouse brand for financial gain without consent from the rest of the group.
On March 8 2022, following a heated exchange between Royce, Budden, and Ortiz on Instagram Live, Crooked I gave further explanation about the situation, saying that he and Ortiz tried to get the group together for years but were unsuccessful, mainly due to Budden's lack of interest and cooperation, and that he and Ortiz wanted to make one final project to give their fans some closure.
