// UNDERSTANDING AUTISM & CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
How to Support Autistic Toddlers At Home:
#1: Less is more
Instead of focusing on what needs to be taught by applying pressure and demands, let’s build
Calm nervous system creates positive opportunities for language retention and comprehension
Validate your child’s feelings and attempt to understand their experiences and relate, which creates communication opportunities and expressions
Build rapport: calm, understood and supported
#2: Ensure that sensory needs are being met:
Create a positive environment
Vestibular input
Proprioceptive input

#3 Always build off of your child’s strengths
JOIN them in their activity
Even if it doesn’t make sense to you or they aren't "playing appropriately"
Let the child lead the activity and you copy
Add on simple / easy and quick steps onto their play activity to expand (don't force them, keep it light and fun!)
Be aware of THEIR body posture and YOUR body posture
Build off of the skills that they have, slowly
#4 Make sure to use high affect (facial expressions)
Increases attention span
Draws attention to activity and face / engagement
Alter voice and intonation
Helps improve understanding facial expressions
Using symbolic gestures improves functional communication and pragmatic (social) skills
Being excited helps improve engagement and interaction naturally
#5 PLAY, PLAY, PLAY!
Children learn skills 40x’s faster in PLAY
Imitate them / copy what they are doing
Add in language slowly
Include your child in all daily activities (doing the laundry, dishes, mopping, cooking, etc) and make it FUN!
