Marsden Grotto's history began around 1782 when a miner, Jack Bates *also known as( "Jack the blaster"), carved out a small cave to live in at the cliffs of Marsden Bay, South Sheilds. turning it into a small local attraction. By the 1830s, Peter Allen expanded the cave into a series of rooms, some serving as a home and others as a tavern, laying the foundation for its future as a hotel. The Grotto, which also has a reputation for smuggling and supernatural tales, is now a notable cliff face pub and restaurant.
