Arunachal Pradesh is one of Asia’s most anthropologically diverse regions, home to over 26 major tribes and more than 100 sub-tribes. Most indigenous people are of Tibeto-Burman origin, with a culture deeply rooted in agriculture and ancient traditions.
Major Ethnic Groups
The population is broadly categorized into three cultural groups based on their religious and geographical backgrounds:
Tani Group: Includes the Nyishi (largest tribe), Adi, Apatani, Galo, and Tagin. They primarily inhabit the central regions and are known for worshipping the Sun (Donyi) and Moon (Polo).
Buddhist Tribes: Concentrated in the west and north (e.g., Tibetan, Monpa, Sherdukpen) following Mahayana Buddhism, and in the east (e.g., Khampti, Singpho) following Theravada Buddhism.
