Title: Biogas Technology Improving Livelihoods- the case of Malawi
In this Television Documentary I travel to Nkhoma in Lilongwe to meet Dzuwa family who in their own little way are implementing biogas technology. Through my interaction with him I discovered that this technology is indeed part of biotechnology specifically within the field of bioprocess engineering.
Biogas production relies on anaerobic digestion, a biological process where microorganisms break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen to produce biogas, a biofuel mainly composed of methane and carbon dioxide. This process therefore is a form of biotechnology because it utilizes living organisms and their metabolic processes to produce biogas.
Where I find the documentary relevant to the call of entry is that the biogas slurry, a byproduct of biogas production from anaerobic digestion is being used as a sustainable and nutrient organic fertilizer for Dzuwa family. Mr Dzuwa told me that after applying this fertilizer to his maize field, soil fertility has greatly improved. It has enhanced soil structure, increased water retention making it more resilient to drought and erosion.
